The IXUS 1000 HS takes decent pictures, but benefits from some tweaking to eke out its best shots. For a slimline 10x optical zoom camera, it ticks a lot of boxes, providing you can live with its short battery life. Read more

    • Lens produces fuzzy images at full 10x zoom, Small battery only lasts 150 shots

The first Ixus with a 10x optical zoom lens and Full HD video (1080p) recording. The Ixus 1000 HS follows hard on the heels of the Ixus 300 HS, which was announced in May. The 10-megapixel sensor appears to be the same in both models but the 1000 HS boasts a 10x optical zoom lens (36-360mm in 35mm format) and is the first Ixus camera to support Full HD video (1080p) recording. The new model will be offered in pink and silver. . . Read more

As a mid-priced compact the Ixus 1000HS sets a new standard. Used conservatively – ISO no more than 200, camera set on P (for program), only use the extreme focal length in emergencies – it raises the bar. Movie mode is good, although we’re not sure how many times the super slow motion will be used. We would recommend the camera without reserve were it not for the battery issue. Read more

    • Image quality is outstanding for a compact, due to the reduced number of pixels which means less noise and less destructive noise reduction and greater dynamic range. ...
    • The small battery is a mystery. There must be some reason for saving space in the camera, but 150 shots per charge is feeble. We would swap 300mm of focal length for a...

Canon's IXUS 1000 HS digital camera is a 10-megapixel megazoom point-and-shoot with a DiG!C 4 processor. The Canon IXUS 1000 HS offers a lot of nifty wiz bang features like high speed and tilt-shift recording modes, an impressive 10x optical zoom and a slow shutter speed mode that can take up to 15-second exposures in low-light conditions. The navigation controls of the IXUS 1000 HS are missing the usual icons and symbols we've all come to know so well. Read more

I'm disappointed with the reviews I have read from cnet writers. If there had been an accurate review I would not have bought this camera. This camera is very hit-and-miss with regards to photo quality. It just can't seem to get colours right in many situations - the poor quality of the photos really stands out. I have a canon SLR and have always bought their compacts, but i can't imagine considering another canon now. Read more

    • Video looks great, helped with the 10x zoom
    • Terrible photo quality, narrow lens, poor battery
