    If you can look past the lack of character development and the overly simplistic battle system, Dragon Quest IX is really enjoyable and will keep players interested for many hours. Also, any game with slimes in it is worth a look, naturally. Read more

    It always amazes me when I hear stories about how popular the Dragon Quest series is in Japan. The entire country seems to react feverishly when the game hits store shelves, similar to how college frats shut down when a new Halo is released (just on a much larger scale that doesn't involve Jagermeister).     The actual fighting is classic turn-based fare, with you issuing orders to your party and then watching the action unfold. There are some basic AI tactical options that you can set for your three followers that will have them focusing on healing, conserving their magic, attacking at will, and so on, or you can choose to just manage each character individually.     At the end of the day, Dragon Quest 9 is unashamedly an old-school RPG. If you loved the mid-90s golden age of RPGs, you’ll likely enjoy this too. Know at the outset, however, that just like many of the titles from the golden age, this is a deeply flawed game. Dragon Quest 9 is a truly phenomenal game...for 1995. Read more
