Ultimately there are more bouquets than brickbats for The Sims Medieval. The graphics are the best of any in the franchise and the musical score is perfectly aligned to the medieval setting. But Sims fans might be disappointed by the lack of freedom in this release, whereas RPG fans will probably appreciate the structured gameplay and character development laced with The Sims's typical light-hearted humour. Closing Comments The Sims Medieval has successfully breathed new life into a franchise that was getting pretty stale. The Medieval setting combined with the streamlined gameplay and quests create an evolved Sims experience that feels deeper and much more fun than any of the other recent Sims games. If you’ve given up on The Sims, you’d be smart to give The Sims Medieval a try. Read more

I've been a big fan of The Sims ever since the original game took up way too much of my time 11 years ago. And while I've played countless sequels, expansion packs, and spin-offs, none of them have been able to recreate the same addictive experience I felt with the first game, until now. The Sims Medieval, on the surface, sounds like yet another way for EA to milk one of its most popular franchises, but that knee-jerk reaction couldn't be further from the truth. Read more

Playing The Sims Medieval is like looking at your neighbour's holiday slides: you're hearing about someone else's grand adventure rather than having one of your own. Read more

    • Has all that Sims charm, from animations to voice-overs, You can approach quests in a number of different ways, Some of the hero-specific skills are really neat
    • Quests become a repetitive chore, Too little freedom to live as you wish, Dollhouse elements are greatly restricted

These are neat twists on the Sims formula, and at first, they're different enough and entertaining enough to inspire the benefit of your doubt. Each campaign (called an ambition) is divided into a series of quests, which you choose from a list after you complete the latest one. Quests have you controlling one or two sims, using these skills to find out, for example, what disease might be affecting the populace or where you might find a proper suitor for the queen. I LOVE the Sims and have always been a huge fan but this game was VERY disappointing. I wasn't expecting much - the same life simulation style as the previous games but set in medieval times. Is that so hard? Instead, you have to choose certain 'heroes' who have certain 'quests' to complete which is total rubbish because they're no fun, and they waste so much of your time - you can't just go to the local pub and chill out and do what you want with your sim. • Buildings, furniture, new clothes, medieval time setting
    • No full control over one sim's life - must always be completing a silly 'quest'

More quest based than The Sims 3, but works about the same. Read more
