The Need for Speed franchise seems to be faltering in the face of stern competition. The Run isn't the worst racer out there, but struggles to find cohesion and may cause many fans to look elsewhere for a high-octane fix. Read more

    • Vehicle physics are admirable. Good variation in terrain, powered by the extremely capable Frostbite 2.0 engine. Autolog functionality is as good as ever.
    • Largely irrelevant story. Questionable AI. Quick Time Events have no place here. An overall lack of polish, particularly evident in checkpoint locations and vehicle po...

I was wowed by the amazing Forza 4 earlier this year, but I have to say I had a lot more fun speeding from San Fran to NYC in The Run . For epic, action-loving racing game fans, I highly recommend it. Four and a half stars. Read more

The Run is an exciting new direction for the Need For Speed series. Ever since my early race-gaming days, the idea of a cross-country race has been an attraction that games were already targeting, with Test Drive and the original Need For Speed (though it also had circuits) having a focus on point-to-point tracks on populated American roads. It's not just the cars themselves that make driving in The Run enjoyable. It's also the places you go. Starting in San Francisco, your path takes you through Yosemite National Park, the Rocky Mountains, downtown Chicago, and plenty of other locations. The roads in The Run aren't entirely faithful to the real roads that inspired them, but they admirably evoke the beauty one might witness on a scenic trip across the United States. Read more

    • Diverse assortment of cars that handle well, Gorgeous, varied courses modeled on real locations, A good number of race types keeps events enjoyable.
    • Lengthy load times sap sense of momentum, Quick-time events and mob chases aren't enjoyable, Frustrating limitations on returning to the cross-country race.
